Culminating Blog Reflection

  Overall, I learned a lot about myself and the world outside of high school from this project. Before starting this project, I had terrible communications skills but now my communication skills have grown. For my mentor hours I took an online class which required me to communicate with my teacher about the mentor forms. I also had to communicate with other students by responding to their forum posts, creating a small debate each week. I used critical thinking in every assignment I did for this class because these assignments required me to do research and develop an argument to defend my point of view.

   This project showed me that I do not want to take any online classes when I go to college because I prefer to learn in a classroom setting. This project also helped me develop my communication and writing skills. Every week I had to do a written assignment and research which helped me develop my research and writing skills. I also learned a lot of interesting things about media law. For example I learned about freedom of speech, internet regulations, conflict of law and defamation. Before taking this class, I had no idea that there were so many laws regarding the internet. I also learned some helpful information about my rights.
 
  Even though I really enjoyed taking this class, I did face a few challenges along the way. One challenge was keeping up with all the work for the class, especially the reading from the textbook. Since this class is online, it was very easy for me to forget about all the assignments and due dates. In order to overcome this challenge, I made sure that I logged onto my class website every Tuesday to see what the assignments for that week were. Another challenge that I encountered was keeping up with the other students, who are all older than me. When I first started this class I felt like my writing skills were not at the same level as some of my fellow students. Despite this, I continued to do my assignments and I was very lucky to have such nice and patient students in my class. Even though I struggled with understanding all the lessons in this class, I still managed to get a 93% on my midterm. This is my greatest accomplishment of this project and I hope to finish this class with a good grade.

  This week was the 12th week of my online class and the subject was Defamation. At the beginning of the week I watched the instructor overview on Defamation and I also watched a video on the internet defamation. This week I also, read all the sources provided by the teacher. One assignment for this week was to read chapter 9 from the textbook which was about defamation. The forum question for this week was "What is Cyber and Online Defamation?" And as always, we had to reply to three other students' posts. I liked learning about this subject because I did not  know what defamation was before I did the research for this assignment. I also enjoyed learning about the different types of defamation and how to handle being falsely accused of defamation.

week 11

April 12, 2015
 This week was the 11th week of my online class. The topic for this week was Intellectual Property. The first assignment was to read and watch all the resources provided by the teacher. The second assignment was to read chapter 8 from the textbook which was about Intellectual Property. The last assignment for this week was to take a short quiz about trademarks and then answer a few reflection questions about the quiz. I did not do very well on the quiz, but I reviewed the explanations of my wrong answers. Next week we are being assigned groups for our group research papers. I am nervous to work with the other students but I am determined to keep up with them.

week 9

March 24, 2015
   This week was the 9th week of my online class. The topic for this week was information access and protection. I was really excited for the lesson this week because it goes perfectly with my essay. At the beginning of the week I watched the instructor overview which was about gathering information.   The forum question for this week was "Can Blogs be Journalism?". I argued that blogs should not be considered journalism because they are usually based on people's opinions, not facts. The second assignment for this week was to read chapter 6 from the textbook which was also about information gathering. Next week I  will not have any assignments for the class because it is spring break. I plan on using this time to catch up on the reading.

Week 8

March 17, 2015
  This week was the 8th week of my online class. On Monday I took the midterm for this class. Before I took the midterm I was very nervous because I did not feel prepared but I was wrong becaue I got a 93% on the midterm! The next assignment for this class is a team research project. In order to prepare for this we had to choose a topic we would be interested in writing about and post it to the forum. I wrote about the issue of finding accurate information online. This assignment is perfect for me because I focused on this issue in my research paper. Another assignment for the week was to read chapter 5 from the text book which was about gathering information.

week 7

March 10, 2015
   This was the 7th week of my online class. The topic for this week was conflict of law. At the beginning of the week I watched the instructor video on conflict of law. The first assignment for this week was to answer the question about the survival of conflict of laws rules and post it to the forum. As always we also had to reply to three other students' posts. I had hard time understanding this weeks assignment because the vocabulary was a little too advanced for me but I still completed the project. The second assignment for this week was a fill in  the blank worksheet. This assignment was much easier for me to complete. Next week is the midterm and I am very nervous for the writing portion of it.

  This week was the 6th week of my online class. The topic for these week was internet regulations. The first assignment for this week was to watch a video about internet regulation, internet freedom and internet activism.The video was an episode from a show called "Adam vs.The Man". The second assignment for this week was to write a short essay about the Facebook privacy policy and post it to the forum. We also had to reply to three other students' posts. Another assignment for this week was to read chapter 4 from the textbook and review the questions at the end.

February 24, 2015
      This was the 5th week of my online class. The first assignment for this week was to watch the instructor lecture on telecommunication regulation. After I watched the lecture I wrote my forum response for the week. The forum topic for this week was Media Ownership and we had to write about the impact of the Telecommunication Act of 1996 on media ownership regulations. I had a hard time doing this assignment because I did not completely understand what this act did. I also struggled with finding research and sources for this assignment.  Overall this was a tough week for me but I plan on getting back on track this week. My goal for this week is to turn my assignments in on time and in the correct place. I also need to give better responses to the other students' posts.

Week 4

February 18, 2015
   This was the fourth week of my online class. The topic for this week was freedom of expression. The first assignment was to watch the instructor video about freedom of speech. The second assignment was to read chapter 2 from the textbook. There are not any written assignments that go with the reading, but the final and midterm questions will come from the textbook. The forum topic for this week was freedom of expression in school. We had to write about the limitatons to the freedom of expression in schools,  court rulings related to this and CSM's policy on time and manner. We also had to reply to three other students' posts. Some of the other students disagreed with my opinion about limitations on freedom of expression in school. I believe that the age difference between me and the some of the other students may have played a role in this disagreement. I like that people disagreed with my opinion because it made the forum more interesting. I found this week's assignment very interesting because it relates to my life as a student. My goal for this next week is to catch up on the reading from the textbook because I have fallen behind.

Week 3

February 9, 2015
   This week was the third week of my online class. I started my week off by watching a lecture about an overview of the legal system. This weeks assignment was to write a short essay about our opinion of the judicial system and if we think that the Supreme Court has too much power. We also had to reply to 3 people about our opinion of their essay. I liked this assignment because I got to talk about my opinion and I enjoyed reading my classmates' opinions. I also found my research very interesting and I learned surprising information about the judicial system. This week I also read and outlined chapter one from the textbook which was an introduction to the legal system.

Week 2

February  4, 2015
         This week was the second week of my online class. The assignment for this week was to watch videos from the CSM library about Information Competency. These videos talked about how to cite information and how to use the library databases to find information.These videos were very relevant to the research I have been doing for my essay. The second part of the assignment was to take a quiz on the videos. The goal of this quiz was to see how much we learned from the videos. Overall I am enjoying the challenge that this class presents for me but I am still having a hard time figuring out how to use the website. I hope that I will get the hang of it soon. I also need to keep up with due dates and assignments. Next week we will begin using the textbook and I am nervous about starting the actual curriculum.

Week 1

January 28, 2014

    Before I registered for the class I am taking at CSM, I had to fill out concurrent enrollment forms and register as a student at CSM. After completing this, I found the online class I wanted to take which is Media Law and Ethics and registered for it.This process took me a while because i was having a difficult time figuring out the website. A few days later the professor for this class, Professor Bennett, sent out an email about getting the textbook for the class. I decided to rent the book from Amazon because this was the cheapest choice. The first assignment for the class was to write a short paragraph about ourselves and our goals for the class and post it to the forum. The second part of the assignment was to reply to three other students about their introductions.This assignment made me very nervous because I was worried about interacting with the other students who are all older than i am. In my introduction I explained that I am a high school student taking the class for a project and I also explained my project. After reading the encouraging responses from other students, I felt a little more at ease about taking this class. I am excited to see what this class has to offer. In order to succeed in this class I need to make sure I stay up to date on my work and check the website daily.
